THE BREED UP PROGRAM

The Breed Up Program provides a structured pathway for improving cattle herds while maintaining transparency and protecting ABCA standards. Genetic improvement is rarely instantaneous, and this program reflects how responsible cattlemen actually work by identifying limitations, making informed breeding decisions, culling deliberately, and improving herds through disciplined selection over time.

ABCA recognizes that many breeders do not begin with cattle that meet full registration requirements. The Breed Up Program allows those breeders to participate honestly, improve their herds over time, and clearly distinguish between cattle that are verified and those still in transition — without lowering standards or compromising integrity.

Relationship to ABCA Standards

The Breed Up Program operates entirely within ABCA Standards & Requirements. It does not modify, override, or relax existing standards. Participation in the Breed Up Program does not exempt animals or breeders from compliance with ABCA rules governing verification, representation, or removal.

For detailed requirements regarding verification, sire eligibility, and animal removal, members should refer to the Cattle Standards & Requirements page.

Purpose of the Breed Up Program

  • Encourage disciplined genetic improvement
  • Promote the use of cattle proven for fertility and functionality
  • Allow honest participation without misrepresenting cattle
  • Protect buyers and breeders through clear classification
  • Reflect how productive herds are built in real-world conditions

The program is designed to improve cattle, not lower standards.

Program Details

A Breed Up animal is a cow that is documented within ABCA but does not meet the requirements for Verified Fertile status.

Breed Up status is an animal designation, not a reflection of the breeder's membership standing or credibility.

Within a single herd, a member may have Verified Fertile cattle, Unverified cattle, and Breed Up cattle.

This mixed status is normal during responsible herd improvement and reflects real-world herd building.

  • It does not meet verification requirements
  • It is intentionally retained during herd transition
  • It is demoted from Verified Fertile status after failing to maintain standards

Breed Up designation allows continued documentation while clearly identifying animals that are not fully qualified.

Breed Up animals are intended to be used deliberately and transparently:

  • Recognize Breed Up status in management decisions
  • Select sires carefully
  • Retain only offspring that demonstrate improvement

Breed Up animals are not represented as Verified Fertile and are labeled accordingly in ABCA records and listings.

  • Using Verified Fertile bulls reduces genetic risk
  • Use of Unverified bulls is permitted, but risk remains with the breeder
  • Offspring eligibility and verification outcomes are governed by ABCA Standards & Requirements

The Breed Up Program allows flexibility while preserving accountability.

Breed Up animals themselves do not become Verified Fertile.

Progress occurs through offspring selection:

  • Meet fertility requirements
  • Demonstrate functional soundness
  • Satisfy verification criteria

Most herds achieve significant improvement within two to three generations when selection is consistent.

A cow that previously held Verified Fertile status may be reclassified as Breed Up if she no longer meets ABCA requirements.

Reclassification maintains transparency while allowing appropriate management decisions.

  • Clearly labeled as Breed Up
  • Not represented as Verified Fertile
  • Distinguished from fully qualified cattle in listings

This protects buyers and maintains trust within the ABCA marketplace.
